Mexico Time Zones in 2026 — Full Map and DST Rules

Mexico has four time zones — and Quintana Roo is its own thing. A clear 2026 guide to which state is on which clock and what changed with DST.

Mexico operates four official time zones across its 32 states, plus one quirky exception in Quintana Roo. Most of the country abolished daylight saving time in October 2022 — but the US-border municipalities still observe it. Here's the full breakdown for 2026.

The Four Time Zones

Quintana Roo — The Eastern Time Outlier

In February 2015, Quintana Roo (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Bacalar) moved from Central to Eastern Time and stopped observing daylight saving time. Practical effect:

  • During US Daylight Time (March–November): Cancun matches Miami exactly.
  • During US Standard Time (November–March): Cancun is one hour ahead of Miami, same as Atlanta.
  • Cancun is always one hour ahead of Mexico City.
  • Most flights between Cancun and CDMX or beyond require checking the time-zone difference.

DST Rules — Mostly Abolished

Mexico's federal government ended daylight saving time for most of the country in October 2022. The exception: 33 border municipalities directly adjacent to the US still switch their clocks twice a year on US dates (second Sunday in March, first Sunday in November) to keep cross-border commerce and commuting aligned.

  • Observes DST: Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada, Tecate (Baja California); Ciudad Juárez (Chihuahua); Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, Matamoros (Tamaulipas); Acuña, Piedras Negras (Coahuila); Anáhuac (Nuevo León) and more border towns.
  • No DST: Everywhere else — Mexico City, Cancun, Oaxaca, Mérida, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Hermosillo (which never observed it).

Border Towns — Watch Out

If you cross the US-Mexico border at Tijuana/San Diego, Juárez/El Paso or Laredo/Nuevo Laredo, the clock change is automatic on your phone — but if you're crossing inland from Baja Sur into Baja Norte, or driving from Sonora into Chihuahua, expect an hour shift.

Tourist Impact

  • Connecting flights through Mexico City to Cancun: 3-hour MEX→CUN flight crosses one time zone — you arrive 4 wall-clock hours after departure.
  • Cabo flights from CDMX: CDMX (Central) to SJD (Mountain) — you arrive 1 wall-clock hour after departure for a 2.5-hour flight.
  • Working remotely: Cancun on Eastern Time matches the US East Coast year-round — popular with remote workers. CDMX on Central matches Houston/Chicago.
  • Calling home: Use a SIM/eSIM with proper time-zone setup (Airalo handles this automatically) so calendar invites don't arrive an hour off.

Preguntas Frecuentes

How many time zones does Mexico have?

Four official zones plus a regional exception — Tiempo del Sureste (Eastern, Quintana Roo only), Tiempo del Centro (Central, most of Mexico), Tiempo del Pacífico (Mountain by US naming, includes Sinaloa/Nayarit/Sonora/Chihuahua), and Tiempo del Noroeste (Pacific, Baja California).

What time zone is Cancun in?

Cancun and all of Quintana Roo are on Eastern Time (UTC-5) year-round. Quintana Roo does not observe DST, so during US daylight time it matches Miami; during US standard time it matches Atlanta one hour ahead.

What time zone is Mexico City?

Central Time (UTC-6 in standard, UTC-5 with DST). Mexico City observes DST until October 2022 reform that ended DST for most of the country.

Did Mexico abolish daylight saving time?

In October 2022, Mexico abolished DST for most of the country. Border municipalities adjacent to the US (about 33 cities including Tijuana, Mexicali, Ciudad Juárez) still observe DST to align with the US side.

What time zone is Tijuana in?

Pacific Time (Tiempo del Noroeste, UTC-8 standard, UTC-7 DST). Tijuana follows California exactly because it's a US-border zone.

Is Sonora on Arizona time?

Yes — Sonora is on Mountain Standard Time year-round (UTC-7), matching Arizona which also doesn't observe DST. So Hermosillo and Phoenix stay aligned 365 days a year.

What time zone is Los Cabos?

Baja California Sur (Cabo, La Paz, Loreto) is on Mountain Time (UTC-7). It does NOT observe DST since the 2022 reform.
