Why visit Oaxaca

Oaxaca has the best food in Mexico, the most distinctive culture, and easy access to mezcal villages, indigenous markets and the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua.

Where to stay

Stay in centro (within 10 blocks of the zócalo) or in Jalatlaco — a quieter colonial neighborhood right next to the historic center.

Food

Try the seven moles, tlayudas, chapulines (grasshoppers), tejate, mezcal, and Oaxacan chocolate. Mercado 20 de Noviembre is the best lunch market in Mexico.

Day trips

  • Monte Albán — Zapotec ruins, 30 minutes by bus
  • Hierve el Agua — petrified waterfalls, full day
  • Mezcal villages — Santiago Matatlán, half day
  • Teotitlán del Valle — Zapotec rug-weaving village

Day of the Dead

Late October to early November turns Oaxaca into the most atmospheric city in Mexico. Book accommodation 6+ months ahead.
