The short answer
US citizens do NOT need a visa for tourism in Mexico. You receive a free FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) tourist permit on arrival, valid for up to 180 days.
The FMM tourist permit
Since 2022, the length of stay granted is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Many travelers report receiving 30 or 60 days instead of the maximum 180. Have a return ticket and proof of accommodation ready.
Length of stay
The permit is valid for the number of days written on it — not 180 by default. Check the form before you leave the airport. If you receive less time than you need, ask politely for a longer permit.
Do NOT plan trips assuming 180 days. Many US citizens are now receiving 30–60 day permits without explanation.
Driving across
If you're driving past the border zone (more than 20km inland), you also need a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP). Get it at the border or online ahead of time.
Common mistakes
- Losing the FMM — there's a fine when leaving
- Overstaying — fines start at $50 and increase
- Assuming you have 180 days when you have less
