Overview
One week in Mexico is enough to see the country's three faces: a world-class capital, a deep-rooted colonial city, and the Caribbean coast. The trick is to fly between them — buses eat too much of your week.
This itinerary assumes you land in Mexico City (CDMX). It's the cheapest international gateway from most of the world and the natural starting point.
Day 1–3: Mexico City
Spend three full days in CDMX. It's enormous and the altitude (2,240m) takes a day to adjust to.
- Day 1: Centro Histórico — Zócalo, Templo Mayor, Diego Rivera murals at Palacio Nacional, lunch at a fonda.
- Day 2: Chapultepec — Anthropology Museum (allow 4 hours) plus a wander through Condesa or Roma for dinner.
- Day 3: Coyoacán — Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul (book online days ahead) plus an early-morning trip to Teotihuacán.
Where to stay: Roma Norte or Condesa. Walking distance to dozens of restaurants and a short Uber to everywhere else.
Day 4–5: Oaxaca
Fly Mexico City → Oaxaca (1 hour). Oaxaca city is small, walkable, and packed with the country's best food.
- Day 4 morning: zócalo, Santo Domingo church, Mercado 20 de Noviembre for lunch (try the moles).
- Day 4 afternoon: mezcal tasting in town or a workshop in nearby Teotitlán del Valle.
- Day 5: full-day trip to Hierve el Agua (petrified waterfalls) and the Tule tree — most hostels run shared tours.
🍫 Don't miss: a tasting flight at one of Oaxaca's small mezcalerías. It's the spiritual home of mezcal.
Day 6–7: Caribbean Coast
Fly Oaxaca → Cancún via Mexico City (4–6 hours including the layover). Pick ONE coastal base — don't try to see Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancún in two days.
- Tulum: best for ruins + cenotes + a boho beach scene. More expensive.
- Playa del Carmen: best for nightlife and ferries to Cozumel.
- Akumal or Puerto Morelos: best for snorkelling and a quieter vibe.
Budget
Realistic mid-range budget for one week (excluding international flights):
| Item | Cost (USD) |
|---|
| Internal flights × 2 | $180–280 |
| Hotels (mid-range, 7 nights) | $420–700 |
| Food & drink | $210–350 |
| Activities & tours | $150–250 |
| Local transport | $60–100 |
| Total | $1,020–1,680 |
What to skip
On a 7-day trip, skip the long bus journeys, the second beach destination, and Chichén Itzá unless you can do it as a Cancún day trip from a base on the coast. Rushing ruins the experience.
Do NOT try to add Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta to a one-week itinerary — they belong in a separate trip.
