Holbox (HOL-bosh) is a 26-mile sliver of sand off the northern Yucatán, separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon. There are no cars, no McDonald's, no Hilton. There are sand streets, hammocks in the surf, whale sharks in summer, flamingos in spring and bioluminescent plankton on moonless nights. Whale Shark Season (Mid-June to Mid-September)

Holbox is one of the world's top whale shark aggregations. Boats leave from the main dock at 7am, motor 1.5 hours offshore to where the whale sharks are feeding on plankton blooms, and you snorkel alongside them in 2 separate in-water encounters of about 5 minutes each. Snorkelers only — no diving allowed by Mexican federal regulation.

  • Tour cost (2026): $130–$180/person.
  • Includes: 2 encounters, snorkel gear, life vest, ceviche lunch, stop at Cabo Catoche or Punta Mosquito.
  • Tour duration: 6–7 hours total.
  • Operators: VIP Holbox, Holbox Whale Shark Tours, Willys Tours.
  • Book: 2–3 days ahead in season; same-day rare in July–August.
Use only operators with the green INAPESCA permit sticker. Unlicensed boats overload, harass animals, and risk fines.

Bioluminescent Plankton

Holbox's lagoon side glows on dark, moonless nights from May to October. Walk into the shallow water at Punta Cocos or take a guided night tour ($35–$60) to a remote stretch of beach. The plankton sparkle blue when the water is disturbed — kicks, splashes and swimming all trigger the glow.

Check the moon phase before booking — bioluminescence is invisible during full or near-full moons. New moon week is the best window.

Best Beaches & Spots

  • Playa Holbox (main beach): Flat, shallow, hammocks in the water at Hot Corner.
  • Punta Mosquito: A 4-km sandbar walk east of town. Flamingos November–March.
  • Punta Cocos: West end. Sunset spot. Bioluminescence at night.
  • Isla Pájaros: Bird sanctuary in the lagoon — only accessible by boat tour.
  • Yalahau cenote/spring: A pirate-era spring on the lagoon side, 30 min by boat.
  • Three Islands tour: Combines Pájaros, Yalahau, and Passion Island ($35/person).

Where to Stay & Eat

  • Budget: Tribu Hostel (dorms $25, privates $80).
  • Mid-range: Casa Las Tortugas, Hotel Mawimbi ($110–$180).
  • Comfort: Casa Iguana, Villas HM Palapas del Mar ($200–$300).
  • Luxury: Casa Las Tortugas (oceanfront), Las Nubes ($350+).
  • Eat: Roots (lobster pizza), Painapol (breakfast), Luuma (small plates), Mandarina (waterfront), Tacos Fideicomiso (best street food).
