Healthcare in Mexico for Expats

Mexican private healthcare is excellent and a fraction of US prices — but you still need insurance.

The system

Mexico has three healthcare tiers: free public (IMSS/INSABI for citizens and residents), private hospitals (used by most foreigners), and high-end international hospitals like Hospital ABC and Médica Sur.

IMSS

Foreigners with Temporary or Permanent Resident status can voluntarily enrol in IMSS for around $400–700 USD per year. Pre-existing conditions are excluded.

Private hospitals

Most expats use private hospitals. A specialist consultation is typically $30–80 USD. A typical hospital admission costs 10–30% of US prices.

Insurance

Travelers should use a policy like SafetyWing Nomad Insurance. Long-term residents often buy a Mexican policy from GNP, AXA or BUPA.
