Mexico ATM Tips & Cash Strategy

ATM withdrawals are still the cheapest way to get pesos in Mexico — if you use the right bank.

Best banks

  • Santander — moderate fees, English-friendly machines
  • BBVA — most ATMs but moderate fees
  • Banorte — wide network
  • Scotiabank — partner-bank discounts for some cards

Fees

Most Mexican ATMs charge a fee of 30–80 pesos per withdrawal on top of any home-bank fee. Maximum withdrawal is usually 6,000–8,000 pesos.

DCC scam

When the ATM offers to charge you in your home currency instead of pesos, ALWAYS choose pesos. The conversion rate is terrible.

Never accept the dynamic currency conversion (DCC) offer — it costs 5–8% extra.

Skimmers

Use ATMs inside bank branches, not on the street. Cover the keypad. Check for unusual attachments to the card slot.

How much to withdraw

Withdraw 4,000–6,000 pesos at a time to minimize fees. Carry less than 2,000 pesos in your wallet at any time.
