How It Works

This free Mexico trip cost calculator uses a per-style multiplicative model calibrated against 2026 pricing from Booking.com, Hotels.com, INEGI consumer price indices, the Numbeo cost-of-living index, and ADO/Aeromexico inter-city fare data. The six-line breakdown — accommodation, food, local transport, inter-city travel, activities and miscellaneous — is then multiplied by trip length, travellers, a season coefficient (off-peak 0.82, shoulder 1.0, peak 1.30) and a weighted city-mix surcharge. Caribbean and Cabo destinations carry resort premiums; inland colonial cities discount. Each result is shareable: every input is encoded in the URL hash so anyone you send the link to sees the same numbers.

What Is Included in the Estimate

The calculator covers the six main expenses of a typical Mexico trip. Accommodation is the biggest variable — hostel dorms run $12–$22 in major cities, mid-range hotels $70–$140, and 4-star Caribbean properties $180–$320. Cancun all-inclusive averages $180–$280 per person per night for 4-star and $300–$500 for 5-star. Food assumes a mix of fonda lunches ($5–$8), street tacos ($1–$2), and a few restaurant dinners ($15–$28) — tips at the standard 10–15% are included. Local transport covers Metro/Metrobus tickets, ADO short-haul buses, and Uber rides. Inter-city travel uses ADO first-class buses ($25–$70) for budget/mid-range and domestic flights (Aeromexico, Volaris, VivaAerobus at $80–$200) for comfort/luxury. Activities covers entry fees and tours — Chichen Itza ($40), Xcaret day pass ($120), cenote visits ($10–$25), mezcal distillery tours ($35–$70). International flights to Mexico and travel insurance are not included.

Biggest saving: avoid the 5-night minimum stays at all-inclusive resorts during US holiday weeks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break). The same 4-star resort that costs $480/night during March break drops to $190/night the second week of May.

Trip Cost by Duration

A quick-reference table for the four most common trip lengths, covering one mid-range traveller in shoulder season visiting two destinations (Mexico City + Cancun & Riviera Maya). Use the calculator above to personalise for your group size, style, season and city mix.

Numbers above are per person. For a couple, multiply by 2. For a family of 4, multiply by ~3.5 (kids share one room but eat and tour as adults). All-inclusive resorts often offer "kids stay free" deals during off-peak — check before booking 2 rooms.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Eat at fondas and comida corrida spots — a 3-course local lunch costs $4–$7 vs. $15–$25 at tourist restaurants.
  • Use ADO first-class buses on the Yucatán Peninsula and Oaxaca routes — cheaper than flights, often more direct ($25–$70 vs. $130+ flight).
  • Avoid the resort hotel zone for excursions — Cancun Hotel Zone tour kiosks charge 2–3x the prices in downtown Cancun (Centro) for the same Chichen Itza/Isla Mujeres tours.
  • Travel May, September or early October — saves 25–30% on hotels and flights. Hurricane risk is low through May.
  • Use a Wise or Revolut card — zero foreign-transaction fees saves 2–3% versus your home bank card. Always choose to be charged in pesos at ATMs and POS terminals (decline DCC).
  • Skip rental cars in Mexico City and Oaxaca — parking is expensive and Uber is widely available and cheap. Rent a car only for the Yucatán cenotes loop, the Riviera Maya, or Baja California.
  • Book Caribbean all-inclusives 4–6 months ahead for early-bird rates 30–40% below walk-up. Cancun and Riviera Maya inventory tightens fast.
  • Pay in pesos, not dollars — many resort restaurants quote in USD at unfavorable rates. Asking for the cuenta in pesos saves 5–8% on the bill.

Methodology & Sources

Our baselines are built from a weighted average of independent data sources, recalibrated every quarter: Booking.com and Hotels.com median listed rates by city (scraped 4-week forward booking window, Tue/Wed stays); the INEGI Encuesta Nacional de Ingresos y Gastos for household food and transport categories; Numbeo restaurant and transport indices cross-checked against city-specific averages; ADO bus and Skyscanner / Google Flights median fare data for inter-city legs; and our own 2023–2025 price tracking for season coefficients. We do not use affiliate referral prices and we do not accept payment to adjust the figures. If you find a category that seems off by more than 15%, email contact@infomexico.org with a receipt and we will investigate and update.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a trip to Mexico cost in 2026?

Budget travellers typically spend $50–$70 per person per day. Mid-range averages $130–$170/day. Comfort travel runs $260–$330/day. Luxury and all-inclusive starts at $500/day. A typical 10-day mid-range trip for two costs $2,800–$3,600 including domestic transport.

Is Mexico expensive to visit?

No — Mexico is one of the best-value destinations in the Americas. Mid-range hotels run $70–$140/night (vs. $180–$280 in the USA), restaurant meals are $10–$22, and street tacos cost $1–$2. Caribbean resorts (Cancun, Tulum, Cabo) are roughly twice the price of inland cities like Oaxaca, Mérida or Guadalajara.

What is the cheapest time to visit Mexico?

May, September and early October are cheapest — you save 20–30% on flights and hotels versus the December–March high season. Hurricane risk is real (Sep–Oct on the Caribbean and Pacific) but rooms are 30–40% off and crowds are minimal.

How much spending money for Mexico per day?

Budget $40–$60 per person per day on top of pre-booked accommodation. This covers meals, local transport, entrance fees and tips. ATMs are widely available; most beach towns also accept credit cards. Carry small peso bills for tips, taxis and street vendors.

How much does 2 weeks in Mexico cost for 2 people?

A mid-range 2-week trip for two typically costs $3,400–$4,600 USD including domestic buses or flights. Budget travellers manage $2,000–$2,800. Luxury all-inclusive trips run $9,000–$15,000+. Use the calculator above to dial in your specific cities and style.

How much does a family of 4 pay for a Mexico trip?

A mid-range 10-day Mexico trip for a family of 4 typically costs $5,000–$6,800 — including hotel, food, activities and inter-city transport. All-inclusive resorts in Cancun or Riviera Maya are often the best family value: $300–$500/night covers room, all meals and most drinks for 4 people.

How much is a week in Cancun for 2 people?

A mid-range 7-night Cancun trip for two costs $2,100–$2,900 with a non-all-inclusive 4-star hotel and à la carte dining. The same week at a 4-star all-inclusive runs $1,800–$2,600 (no surprises). 5-star all-inclusive crosses $3,500. Add $400–$700 for tours (Chichen Itza, Isla Mujeres, cenotes).

What is not included in the calculator?

The calculator does NOT include international flights to Mexico, travel insurance, the FMM tourist permit (free if arriving by air, $30–$40 if arriving by land or sea), passport fees, or pre-trip vaccinations. Tipping (10–15%) is included in the food and miscellaneous lines.

How accurate is the Mexico trip cost calculator?

Estimates fall within ±15% for typical trips, calibrated against Booking.com 4-week-ahead median rates, INEGI consumer price data, Numbeo restaurant indices and ADO bus/Aeromexico flight data. We recalibrate every quarter. Your actual cost depends on booking timing, destination mix and how often you eat at street stands vs. restaurants.

Is travel insurance necessary for Mexico?

Yes — strongly recommended. Mexican private hospitals accept tourists but expect immediate payment ($300–$1,500 for a basic ER visit, $5,000+ for an overnight stay). Public hospitals are uneven. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance from $45/month covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation and stolen gear. For driving, you also need Mexican auto liability insurance — your home policy is invalid.

Can I use this calculator for an all-inclusive resort?

Choose "Luxury / All-Inclusive" as the style. The Luxury baseline assumes a 4–5★ all-inclusive in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta or Los Cabos at $300–$500/night for two — meals and most drinks included. Inter-city transfers and excursions are still added on top.

How can I lower my Mexico trip cost?

Biggest lever: travel May, September or early October — saves 25–30% on everything. Use ADO buses instead of domestic flights ($30–$70 vs. $120–$200). Eat at fondas (family-run lunch spots) instead of restaurants — full comida corrida is $4–$7. Stay in colonial cities (Oaxaca, Mérida, Guadalajara) instead of resort beaches. Use a Wise card to avoid 3% foreign-transaction fees and skip dynamic-currency-conversion at ATMs.
