Cancún Travel Guide

Cancún is the gateway to the Caribbean coast — but where you stay matters more than which beach you pick.

Hotel Zone vs Downtown

The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a 22km strip of beachfront hotels. Downtown Cancún (El Centro) is where locals live — cheaper, more authentic, but no beach access. Choose the Hotel Zone for a beach holiday and downtown for a cheaper base if you want to explore.

Beaches

Playa Delfines is the best public beach with the famous CANCÚN sign. Playa Marlin and Playa Chac Mool are also free and beautiful.

Day trips

  • Isla Mujeres — 30-minute ferry, bike the island, swim with turtles
  • Chichén Itzá + Cenote Ik Kil — long but iconic
  • Holbox island — 3-hour drive then ferry, but worth it
  • Tulum + cenotes — 90 minutes south

Sargassum

Sargassum (brown seaweed) can wash up on the Caribbean coast from May to October. Resorts run cleanup teams but it can be unsightly. Check sargassum forecast websites before booking.

Where to eat

Skip the Hotel Zone chains. Take a 15-minute Uber to downtown for cheap, real Mexican food at Mercado 28 or Parque de las Palapas.
