Can tourists open accounts?

Almost no Mexican bank will open an account for tourists on an FMM. You need a Temporary or Permanent Resident card.

Best banks

  • Citibanamex — branches everywhere, English-speaking staff in tourist areas
  • BBVA México — biggest bank in Mexico, good app
  • Santander — accepts foreigners with residency
  • Banorte — broadest branch network

Documents

Resident card, passport, proof of address (utility bill or rental contract), Mexican phone number, RFC tax ID.

Digital alternatives

If you don't qualify for a Mexican account, use Wise for multi-currency, Revolut for spending, and a US/UK debit card for ATM withdrawals.
