The Chepe train

El Chepe (officially Chihuahua al Pacífico) runs from Los Mochis on the Pacific to the city of Chihuahua, climbing through the canyons. There are two services: Chepe Express (tourist class) and Chepe Regional (local).

Where to stop

The two essential stops: El Fuerte (a colonial town near the Pacific end) and Divisadero (the canyon viewpoint).

The Tarahumara

The Rarámuri (Tarahumara) are the indigenous people of the canyons, famous for ultra-distance running.

Best time to go

October to April. Summers are hot at the canyon floor and winter brings snow at the rim.

Logistics

Fly into Los Mochis or Chihuahua. Buy train tickets online in advance for Chepe Express.
