Isla Mujeres — Visitor Guide for 2026

How to do Isla Mujeres as a day trip or overnight stay from Cancun: ferry prices, golf-cart rentals, the best beach (Playa Norte), snorkeling and what most travelers get wrong.

InfoMexico.org · Independent guide · Not affiliated with any government

Isla Mujeres is a 4-mile-long island 8 miles off the Cancun coast — golf carts instead of cars, the famous Playa Norte beach at the north tip, and easy snorkeling at the underwater MUSA sculpture museum. It's the easiest day trip from Cancun and one of the best beaches in Mexico's Caribbean. This 2026 guide tells you which ferry to use, what a golf cart actually costs, where to eat, and which "must do" activities are skippable.

How to Get There

You can't drive to Isla Mujeres — only ferry. There are two ferry zones serving travelers:

  • Puerto Juárez (Cancun mainland): The locals' ferry. Faster, cheaper, more frequent. $13 RT, 20-min crossing, departures every 30 minutes.
  • Hotel Zone piers (El Embarcadero, Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol): Tourist-priced ferries. $20 RT, 30-min crossing, departures every 30–60 minutes.

For most travelers, take an Uber to Puerto Juárez ($8–$15 from Hotel Zone) and use the cheap ferry. The boats are nearly identical; the price difference is paying for ferry-pier convenience.

Ultramar is the dominant operator. Buy round-trip tickets at the gate or in advance via ultramarferry.com.

Renting a Golf Cart

A golf cart is the ideal way to circle Isla Mujeres. The full island is only 7 miles round-trip. Rentals at the ferry terminal and along Avenida Rueda Medina:

  • Full-day: $50–$70.
  • Half-day (4 hours): $30–$45.
  • License required: Yes — bring a driver's license.
  • Insurance: Most rentals require a $100 cash deposit, returned at end if no damage.
  • Reserve ahead: December–April high season often sells out by 11am.

Playa Norte

Playa Norte sits at the north tip of the island — shallow, turquoise, no waves, soft white sand, with sunset views over Cancun. Public beach with free entry; bring towels or rent a chair from beach clubs ($10–$20). Beach clubs to know: Buho's, Chi Chi's & Charlie's, Bambu Beach, Na Balam. Crowded 11am–3pm; arrive at 9am or after 4pm for space.

Punta Sur and the Sculpture Garden

Punta Sur is the southern tip — limestone cliffs, the easternmost point in Mexico, a small Mayan ruin (Templo de Ixchel) and a sculpture garden of giant metal pieces by international artists. Entry $5. Sunrise here is the iconic photo (first place in Mexico to see the sun rise). Allow 60–90 minutes.

MUSA Underwater Museum

MUSA — Museo Subacuático de Arte — is a 500+ underwater sculpture installation in the channel between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, designed to take pressure off natural reefs. Two depths: a shallow gallery (10 ft, snorkel-able) and a deep gallery (30 ft, divers only). Snorkel tours from Isla Mujeres run $35–$55 per person, 2 hours, departing from the ferry pier.

Food and Where to Eat

  • Lola Valentina: Best ceviche on the island, Avenida Hidalgo. Mains $12–$22.
  • Mango Café: Best breakfast — pancakes, lobster benedict. $9–$14.
  • Javi's Cantina: Solid Mexican on a budget. $8–$14.
  • El Sushiman: Surprisingly good Japanese-Mexican fusion. $14–$24.
  • Rooster Café: Brunch destination, often a wait. $10–$18.
  • Captain Tony's seafood shacks (Garrafón Beach): Whole snapper $14, fresh.

Day Trip vs Overnight

A day trip from Cancun gives you 6–8 useful hours on the island — enough for Playa Norte, lunch, golf-cart loop and Punta Sur. Overnight stays unlock sunrise at Punta Sur and quiet pre-9am Playa Norte (before day-trippers arrive). Hotels worth booking: Privilege Aluxes ($240–$380), Casa Maya Boutique ($150–$220), Mia Reef ($280–$420 AI).

Common Mistakes

  • Taking the Hotel Zone ferry by default. 50% more expensive for the same boat.
  • Renting a moped instead of a golf cart. More accidents, no shade, no cargo space.
  • Skipping cash. Many vendors and beach clubs are cash-only.
  • Going only to the south end. Most travelers love Playa Norte, not Garrafón.
  • Booking Garrafón Park. Now overpriced for what it offers; MUSA snorkel from town is better.
Smart day-trip plan: 8:00am ferry from Puerto Juárez, 8:30am golf cart pickup, 9:00am Playa Norte (2 hours pre-crowd), 11:30am golf-cart loop and Punta Sur, 1:30pm lunch, 3:00pm shopping/beach, 5:30pm ferry back.
