Mexico has no formal digital nomad visa — but the Temporary Resident visa lets you live in Mexico for up to 4 years.

The route

Most digital nomads use the Visa de Residente Temporal (Temporary Resident Visa). It's not a dedicated nomad visa but it requires no Mexican employer or sponsor.

Income requirement

You must prove either: monthly net income of around $4,300 USD for the past 6 months, OR savings/investment balances of around $73,000 USD over the past 12 months. Numbers update yearly with the Mexican minimum wage.

💡 The exact threshold depends on the specific consulate. Some are stricter than others — check requirements at your local Mexican consulate.

Application steps

  • 1. Book an appointment at a Mexican consulate in your home country (NOT in Mexico)
  • 2. Submit financial proof, passport, photos and the application form
  • 3. Receive a 6-month entry visa stamped in your passport
  • 4. Enter Mexico within 6 months
  • 5. Within 30 days of entry, exchange the entry stamp for a Temporary Resident card at INM

Taxes

Holding a Temporary Resident card does not automatically make you a Mexican tax resident. You become a tax resident if Mexico becomes your center of vital interests OR if you spend more than 183 days in the country.

Renewals

First Temporary Resident card is valid for 1 year. After that you can renew in 1, 2 or 3-year increments, up to a total of 4 years.
