Coba Ruins — Visitor Guide for 2026

How to visit Coba — the jungle Mayan ruins 45 minutes from Tulum: tickets, the bicycle network, the climbable pyramid (Nohoch Mul), and how it compares to Tulum and Chichen Itza in 2026.

Coba is the jungle Mayan site 45 minutes inland from Tulum — a network of largely unrestored stone ruins spread across 30 square miles of dense forest. It's the third-most-visited Mayan site on the Riviera Maya (after Chichen Itza and Tulum) but still less crowded than either, with a totally different atmosphere: shaded jungle paths, howler monkeys overhead, and the sense of walking through a city that's only partially uncovered. This 2026 guide covers tickets, the bike network and how to plan your day.

History and Significance

Coba was a major Classic-period Mayan city, occupied roughly 100 BC to 1500 AD, with a peak population of around 50,000 between 600 and 900 AD. At its height it controlled a network of 50+ stone causeways (sacbeob) — the longest of which ran 60 miles to Yaxuná, near present-day Chichen Itza. Coba never fully collapsed; it was occupied at lower density when the Spanish arrived. Excavation began in the 1970s but only about 5% of the site has been cleared. The bulk of Coba is still under jungle.

  • Colectivo (shared van): From Tulum Pueblo, $3 each way, 50 min.
  • ADO bus: Limited departures, $5 one-way, 1 hour.
  • Taxi: $35–$50 one-way; $80–$100 with wait.

Bicycles, Pedi-Taxis, or Walking

The main visitor loop at Coba is 4 miles. Walking covers it in 3+ hours and means you'll skip secondary structures. Bicycle ($4 for the day) is the obvious move and fits 80% of visitors. Pedi-taxis ($14–$18) are 3-wheeled bikes where a driver pedals you — for travelers with mobility issues or who don't want to bike. Most visitors regret not getting bikes.

Nohoch Mul and Other Structures

The major structures, in order of priority:

  • Nohoch Mul: The 138-foot pyramid that was, until 2020, the tallest climbable Mayan pyramid. Climbing is suspended; you can view from the base.
  • Coba Group (Ix-Moja): The main entrance plaza with several stelae and ball court remnants.
  • Macanxoc Group: A stelae cluster 30-min bike ride from the entrance with carvings of Mayan rulers.
  • Conjunto Las Pinturas: Painted-temple ruins with traces of original colored frescoes.
  • Ball Court: Smaller than Chichen Itza but well-preserved.

Best Time to Visit

Open at 8:00am. Tour buses from Cancun and Playa del Carmen arrive 10:30am–noon. Be there at opening for cool air, no crowds and active wildlife. The afternoon (after 2:30pm) also clears out as buses head home, but the heat is oppressive.

What to Bring

  • Mosquito repellent — Coba is jungle, mosquitoes are real.
  • Sun hat for the open plazas (Nohoch Mul area is exposed).
  • 2 liters of water; vendors at the entrance only.
  • Comfortable shoes — paths are gravel and roots.
  • Cash for bike rental and snacks.
  • Phone with offline map; cell signal weak.

Common Mistakes

  • Walking the whole site. You'll be exhausted before the major plazas. Rent the bike.
  • Going at midday. Heat + humidity in the jungle = fast exhaustion.
  • Forgetting bug spray. Mosquitoes are abundant in shaded sections.
  • Skipping the cenotes nearby. Cenotes Multun-Ha and Choo-Ha are 10 minutes past Coba — perfect cool-down.
  • Trying to climb Nohoch Mul. Closed. Don't step over the rope.
Best full-day combo from Tulum: 7am drive, 8am Coba opening with bike (3 hours), 11am Multun-Ha cenote ($10, 1 hour), 1pm lunch in Coba village, 3pm Tulum ruins on the way back.
