The boom

Since 2020 Mexico has become a top-3 nomad destination globally, especially Mexico City, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Best bases

  • Mexico City (Roma/Condesa) — biggest scene
  • Playa del Carmen — beach + nomad town vibe
  • Mérida — quieter, safer, fastest-growing
  • Oaxaca — culture-first, smaller scene

Community

Nomadlist, Selina, Outsite, WeWork, plus dozens of Facebook groups and Slack communities. Easy to find your tribe.

Downsides

  • Gentrification has pushed locals out of Roma and Tulum
  • Tourist tax of resentment is real in some neighborhoods
  • Internet still patchy outside major cities

How long to stay

FMM tourist permit grants up to 180 days. Most nomads either do visa runs or upgrade to Temporary Resident.
